UML. Programming languages. |
Definition of UML |
Short for Unified Modeling Language, a general-purpose
notational language for specifying and visualizing complex software,
especially large, object-oriented projects. UML builds on previous
notational methods such as Booch, OMT, and OOSE.
The primary goals in the design of the UML were:
-
Provide users with a ready-to-use, expressive
visual modeling language so they can develop and exchange
meaningful models.
-
Provide extensibility and specialization
mechanisms to extend the core concepts.
-
Be independent of particular programming languages
and development processes.
-
Provide a formal basis for understanding the
modeling language.
-
Encourage the growth of the OO tools market.
-
Support higher-level development concepts such as
collaborations, frameworks, patterns and components.
-
Integrate best practices.

UML-Reference-Manual |
The wish to enhance application of the model-based method motivated the creation
of the
UML-editor. In this sense the editor is unique, since it permits the modeling of
UML/INTERLIS, i.e.
the synthesis of two standards within the scope of data-modeling. INTERLIS is a
specific form of UMLwhich permits the automatic derivation of different formats
(amongst others the XML-Schema).
